Combing the first release of Paycheck Protection loan data from the Small Business Administration with the Chronicle’s list of Atlanta’s wealthiest ZIP codes and Census data, this article analyzes which areas of the city saw the most businesses approved for PPP funding.

Using data from the Annie E. Casey foundation, this story describes how young children are the least likely to be counted accurately in the decennial census. The undercount means that the needs of the most at-risk youth are the hardest to represent and support.

I used Python to analyze Food and Drug Administration data on drug shortages for this investigation by Erika Fry for the 2018 Fortune 500 issue of the magazine.

These interactive visualizations provide information about mass shootings in the U.S. dating back to 1966. Created primarily with d3.js libraries in 2015, the graphic continues to be updated by the data team at the AJC and is considered one of the most comprehensive nationwide lists available to the public.

 

Diversity data from Fortune 500 companies, Fortune magazine

I built this dataset along with Fortune’s data editor, Stacy Jones, in 2017 (more information about our methodology can be found here). It was the first time diversity had been measured across the annual list. I created the graphic using Adobe Illustrator.

 
 

Gender Bias in Walmart job postings, Fortune magazine

By scraping Walmart job postings and using Textio’s software to analyze the language for gender bias, Fortune’s data editor, Stacy Jones, and I found that the majority of the job descriptions posted by the nation’s largest corporate employer were more likely to attract male candidates.

 

Cost of College, Atlanta Journal-Constitution

With the AJC’s data team, I took a look at how college costs have risen over generations and created a calculator to determine how many hours at a minimum-wage job it would take to pay for tuition, along with other helpful graphics.

 

Defining “middle class”, Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The middle class is easy to name check but harder to define. This set of 2016 graphics, created with the AJC’s data team, shows which family incomes in the Atlanta metro area qualify as middle class.
